Oh, Jerusalem!

Pentecost or the fifteenth day is one of the prominent feasts in the Christian liturgical year commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples of Christ after the Resurrection. It is celebrated seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday.

On this day, June 12, 2011, I had received a permit that allowed me to enter Jerusalem. As I decided to go attend the celebrations in the Holy city with my mother, I knew I’d have to face the checkpoint. As a Palestinian, I believe that it is my right to go to Jerusalem without any permit but the actual situation forbids me.

So, after being searched on the checkpoint, we successfully made it in! The first view I saw after crossing the checkpoint was this settlement!

We took the bus to go to east Jerusalem where we walked through the Old City streets. It just felt great to be there.

As Christians, it was our priority to go to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s been more than a year since I’ve been there, though it’s only 30 minutes by car from my house!

Finally, we have reached the room of the last supper where the Pentecost mass took place. I felt so honored to just be standing there. Many Christians around the world would wish to be in my place.

Going back to Bethlehem, we had to pass the checkpoint again. This time, the Israeli soldiers did not even care to lift their eyes to look at us! They deal with the papers we carry and not us as humans!

I only wish I could go to Jerusalem without being asked where I was going or even without holding a permit.

This song is for Jerusalem, I hope you like it. My best part of the lyrics goes like this: Jerusalem, they left you lonely, so lonely with no defense, too weak to face offence. City of God, be aware!
